I ran into my first real issue this evening. I was trying to set up 2 SIP and 2 SCCP phones on CME. Everything was working except one SIP phone couldn’t receive calls from the other phones. It could make calls though. All calls to that particular SIP phone with extension 3005 would come up busy.

debug ccsip messages didn’t show anything useful. Neither did a whole lot of other debugs. On a whim, I looked at debug voip dial-peer:

BR2#debug voip dialpeer
voip dialpeer default debugging is on
BR2#
Feb 15 01:24:31.677: //-1/xxxxxxxxxxxx/DPM/dpMatchPeersCore:

Match Rule=DP_MATCH_DEST; Called Number=3005
Feb 15 01:24:31.677: //-1/xxxxxxxxxxxx/DPM/dpMatchPeersCore:
Result=Success(0) after DP_MATCH_DEST
Feb 15 01:24:31.677: //-1/xxxxxxxxxxxx/DPM/dpMatchPeersMoreArg:
Result=SUCCESS(0)
List of Matched Outgoing Dial-peer(s):
1: Dial-peer Tag=20002
2: Dial-peer Tag=40002

Now that doesn’t look right. Why would there be 2 matches? A SIP phone should create only 1 dial-peer in the 40,000 range. Sure enough, I accidentally created an SCCP entry via the ephone-dn command.

BR2#sh dial-peer voice summary
dial-peer hunt 0

40001  voip  up   up             3006     0  syst ipv4:10.10.210.251:8

Removing the offending ephone-dn resolved the issue. Well, that wasn’t really 2 hours wasted as I got a chance to look a little closer at many other useful debugs.

As I am doing the research to build my home lab, one of the first issues I had to confront was the ip phones. With version 3, it looks the 7960s are not going to cut it. Even the 7961s are outdated. As can be seen from the equipment list, the actual lab will have 7965s. Some of the things the earlier generation phones don’t support are BLF, + dialing, many SIP features, g722 and ILBC codecs. Although I hear that the 7962s can work just as well, I decided to order some 7965s.

Feature Support by Protocol for Cisco Unified IP Phone:

Also of note is that the ports on this module must be set to trunk mode for the ip phones.

“?” will be enough to get by on these switches. Pretty much similar to the other switches(3550s,3560s) as far as this section is concerned.

I know all too well how valuable it is to have a home rack . After all, debugs are a CCIE’s best friend.

However, looking over this list, it looks like remote rack time will be required — a lot of it. I think I have enough equipment to test at least 3/4 of the requirements. For the RS, I had the full rack at home. For the Security, I had enough to do around 90% of the workbooks that were out there. I used around 60 hours of remote rack time, mainly to work on my speed.

We’ll see how many remote rack hours I will have to put in for this cert.

Good news is that I’ve a little experience with of each of the topics. The bad news is that this experience is grossly inadequate for the IE. Actually, that’s not really bad news. As all of us who have gone through the CCIE certification process knows, the challenge of the lab is a given. Those who view this challenge as an argument will quickly find themselves, well, pursuing other challenges.

Since my RS IE, I’ve never been one to prepare for the written. By this I mean, I figured if I prepare for the lab, then I would be more than ready for the written. In other words, when I feel like I have ready for the lab, I will sign up for the written. Still, given the long lead time for a seat in RTP (where I’ve sat for both labs), I may have to reconsider.
